MOULTON BICYCLE CLUB WEEKEND 2021

A trio of Series 1 Moulton deluxes

Wigwams on the lawn

The long ride at Great Chalfield … Where’s Wally?

Since the mid-1970s members of the Moulton Bicycle Club have visited The Hall to pay homage to the Moulton bicycle and its creator, Dr. Alex Moulton. In the early days the visitors were few, and Alex Moulton would buy lunch for the group at a suitable hostelry. Latterly the numbers have grown, often with well over a hundred arriving each September. Many camp on the lawns of The Hall, as Dr. Moulton had invited them to for many years, delighting in the sight of so many ‘wigwams’ in the garden.

Whilst these Covid times have restricted overseas travel and we miss the large groups that have often arrived from faraway countries, the turnout this year was excellent with over 150 visitors. Many were familiar, but there was no shortage of new faces keen to learn more about Alex Moulton’s unique small-wheeled bicycle. Around half of these visitors camped out in the shadow of The Hall. Our most intrepid guest was Newton Dixon, who flew in from New York just to come to The Hall and ride with the Moultoneers.

As in previous years (although obviously not last year), there was a ‘bring and buy’ sale wtih many stalls selling everything one could need for servicing and maintaining your Moulton, courtyard discussions and speeches, and a convivial barbecue on the Saturday evening. The Alex Moulton Charitable Trust ran tours of The Hall and the gardens, and on Sunday there were three group rides around the local lanes - the longest of these taking in Great Chalfield, Corsham, Bath and the Two Tunnels Greenway.

The weekend was blessed with good weather - it is remarkable how often this is the case - and a good time was had by all. It was only after the last of the campers had packed up on Sunday afternoon that a few drops of rain fell. We look forward to welcoming the Moulton Bicycle Club back next year, a year that promises a great celebration of sixty years of the iconic Moulton bicycle.
