Sebastian Conran - 100 words on Alex Moulton

As we build our collection of literary sketches of Alex Moulton - click here - we are delighted to have received a very touching ‘100 words’ tribute to Alex Moulton from the famous designer Sebastian Conran:

The Alex I knew was a natural and insightful engineer and a very good teacher. He was an inspiration to me and I learned something useful from practically every single conversation we had, whether it was the ideal weight distribution of single tracked vehicles or the momentum of the hydraulic fluid in his Hydrolastic suspension systems and how this related to domestic plumbing issues.

He also had a strong affinity for elegant design and was always enthusing on some object whether it be a Minox sub-miniature camera or a Ferrari GTB; he also had a strong opinion on practically everything - especially if it involved engineering and cars [Austin Minis - Good / BMW Minis - Bad] . Alex was exceptionally good company, a wonderful raconteur with a shameless ear for gossip, he had a very dry and sharp sense of humour and some wicked anecdotes too… and I miss him dearly.

The Alex Moulton Charitable Trust is inviting those who knew Alex and/or his designs to contribute “100 words on Alex Moulton” to help to build  a collection of informative and insightful literary sketches of this remarkable man and his creations. We are not being strict on the number of words, but the idea is to keep it reasonably spontaneous and not onerous. As Alex himself would say when an idea came up: “Get it down on paper.”

Please send any contributions via this email link - please let us know if you are happy for your words to be published on our site, and please include a suitable photograph if possible.
