Eric

Found on the ground floor of the property, the Eric room was once the working office of Alex Moulton’s staff and has now been transformed into a unique, calm, and comfortable place to stay for a perfect night’s sleep.

  • The namesake of the Eric room, Charles ‘Eric’ Moulton was the second son of John and Alice Blanche Moulton. Eric, as he was commonly known amongst close family members and friends was a serving second lieutenant and member of the 6th Wiltshire Regiment.

Following the declaration of war in 1914 between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers, Eric would be deployed to Northern France.

On the evening of 16th September 1915, the twenty-six-year-old was shot and fatally wounded.

  • Inspired by the bravery and heroism of the patriotic young soldier, the Eric room uses colours from the Wiltshire Regiment uniform and has been uplifted with refurbished tables and chairs. Adding a new king-size bed with a deep tufted mattress, the Eric room features an ensuite green tiled shower room, converted from what once was a majestic fireplace that now includes a spacious rainfall shower.

Kingston

Situated on the second floor of the property, the Kingston room features framed illustrations of the namesake of this captivating space, the Duchess of Kingston, notorious for being the first woman to be tried and convicted of bigamy in Great Britain In 1776, and who was a previous resident of The Hall.

  • The Kingston room is aptly named after the self-styled Duchess of Kingston who would scandalise Georgian society after beginning an improper liaison with Evelyn Pierrepont, the 2nd Duke of Kingston.

In 1776, Elizabeth Chudleigh, the Duchess of Kingston would find herself on trial for the crime of bigamy. The trial was one of the sensations of the Georgian Age and took place in Westminster Palace in which thousands of tickets were sold with even Queen Charlotte in attendance, such was the notoriety.

Notorious for her topless masquerade costumes and about a decade younger than her Duke lover, the controversial couple would cohabit unmarried for close to 20 years before marrying in 1769.

The Duke was a prominent figure in the fashionable society of his day, famed also as an early excavator of The Roman Baths. As a young man, the Duke was reputed to be “the handsomest man in England” and was one of the most sought peers on the marriage market. So, it would come as a shock to the Georgian elite when he abruptly took up with Elizabeth Chudleigh, who was separated but still legally married to her husband, Augustus John Hervey.

The Hall has a storied history associated with the infamous couple after the Duke inherited the estate in 1722 from his mother, Rachel Baynton, the Duchess of Kingston. Renaming the estate Kingston Hall, the Duke would bequeath Elizabeth the property upon his death in 1773.

  • A brightly coloured floral heritage wallpaper wraps around the chamber providing guests with a gorgeously cosy feel. Especially lovely is the sitting area with a restored sofa and chair, rescued and lovingly reupholstered. Also featured in the room is a restored carriage trunk from the late 19th century, recently discovered in the servant's quarters of the house.

Guests are invited to enjoy the charming iron-framed super king-size bed, featuring softly curving lines and delicate mouldings offering the deepest and most comfortable mattress for the best night’s sleep. The Kingston room is additionally furnished with a hardwood mahogany-stained two-door wardrobe alongside a warm elm vintage writing desk.

Take a luxuriating soak in the deep roll-top slipper bath in the exquisitely refurbished adjoining bathroom. This beautiful bathroom also features a walk-in gold rainfall shower finished in a deep blue tiled finish.

Enjoy a morning coffee and soak up the natural light that dazzles through the 17th-century-stained glass windows that overlook the pond quadrant garden.
