After the declaration of war, John Moulton chaired a recruitment meeting in Bradford on Avon and over 200 young men volunteered to fight for their country. 120 of these worked for the Spencer Moulton Rubber Company, including John’s youngest son, Charles Eric Moulton. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 6th Wiltshire Regiment, Eric Moulton recorded his training and time in action in his letters home to his mother at The Hall. The early letters are light-hearted and reassuring, but soon the mood turns darker - “it sounds very nasty doing these sorts of things but when you have been in this place for a day or two, civilisation seems to drop back to the dark ages”. A touching and poignant read.
