Christmas at The Hall Estate With Dr. Alex Moulton

Christmas at The Hall Estate with Dr. Alex Moulton was never a grand spectacle, nor was it governed by strict routine. Instead, it reflected the gentle rhythms of Dr. Moulton’s life: family-focused and understated.

Although Alex often spent Christmas away from The Hall, sometimes with his sister Dione, his brother John, their families, or close friends, the festive season still brought loved ones together. If they weren’t celebrating on the day itself, the Moulton family would frequently gather at The Hall Estate either before or after Christmas, filling the house with warm conversation and familiar company.

While many of these cards weren’t overtly festive, this particularly memorable 1999 design shows Toby standing in the doorway of The Hall beside a Christmas tree.

One of the most charming traditions of the season was Alex’s annual Christmas card. Each year, house staff and the team from the Moulton Bicycle Company received a specially designed card created by artist and longtime friend Brian Walker. These cards became miniature time capsules of The Hall Estate, often featuring its architecture alongside playful illustrations of Moulton bicycles and Alex’s distinctive car collection, alongside his much-loved cat, Toby.

When Alex was at home for Christmas Day, the celebrations took place in the Dining Room, a space rich with history and perfectly suited for tradition. At Dione’s request, Christmas dinner was a classic affair: a traditional roast with all the trimmings, served with warmth and simplicity.

When celebrations were held at The Hall Estate, the meal was a traditional Christmas dinner, though Alex himself preferred simple, homecooked dishes made from high-quality local ingredients.

Despite overseeing such a feast, Alex himself preferred unfussy, homecooked meals. He was particularly fond of homemade soups, fresh fish, and comforting British staples like Beef Wellington. His tastes leaned savoury over sweet, but he always ensured there were two dessert options available for guests. Food was sourced locally in Bradford on Avon and was consistently of the highest quality, reflecting Alex’s appreciation for well-made, thoughtfully prepared dishes.

Christmas at The Hall Estate was never about extravagance. It was about tradition, good company, and the quiet joy found in familiar rituals, a festive reflection of the man who made The Hall Estate his life’s work.
